Writing in English from now on

Welcome visitors, new and old friends, to my digital business card and hopefully content archive.

I’ve kept this site alive in order to ensure that I was googlable and had an outlet for my geeky interests, interviews and publications, mindful of the fact that a lot of my early work isn’t available online because it pre-dated archive.org. Therefore I’ll be attempting to make a log here, but for the most part my ambitions for thorlaug.is are to update those interested on what I’m working on in my research and how my work progresses.

I’m now 3 weeks into my PhD studies in Cyber-International Relations and so far it has been both extremely challenging, rewarding and invigorating. In short I’m using Warren’s Functional Democratic Framework in order to quantify whether Surveillance Capitalism (Big Data i.e. Google, Facebook, Apple etc.) is undermining Democracy, and if so in what areas.

I’m currently brushing up on methodologies and regression analysis, something I learned before the turn of the century and am relieved to find out that all it takes to get back in the saddle is a little time and effort. I was worried I had forgotten everything learned in Methodologies I – III but fortunately it’s all still there if I can coax it out.

I’m also extremely happy to have found myself a mentor as well as a fantastic guide and will hopefully have forged formal partnerships with other departments and schools before the semester is over.

Exciting things are happening but I don’t want to jinx anything by speaking on it prematurely. sorry!

If you are interested in knowing more about my work please see my project outline in the next post… updated shortly – I promise!

Those of you interested in getting in touch – please find me on linkedin.com/in/thorlaug and my-first-name gmail account (not typing it out to avoid spam, ykwim)
